Quality and consistency:  a thoughtful approach combining depth of pedigree with carefully considered out-crosses.

An incredible and unique art - with great thanks to our goats for supplying the wonderful milk.

Our own recipes developed on the farm - with goat milk and/or cheese of course!

How good were the stars to lead me here

the year of the blue goat, brown duck,

the year of the squawk & coo, the loyal dog

who barked at strange men & storms

Thank you for visiting the Jasper Farm website. Located in central Iowa, we have been raising purebred Nubian goats since 2003.  We are very proud of our small and carefully selected herd with well-researched bloodlines.

Our breeding program has a focus on outstanding udder capacity and attachment, ease of hand-milking, strong bone structures and constitutions, and friendly, easy-going personalities.

We cherish our small farm, named after a beloved dog in our lives as well as reflecting our residence in beautiful Jasper County, Iowa.  In addition to raising purebred Nubian goats and making cheese, we produce much of our own food on the farm.

Our small herd is rotated among 3 pastures, where their browsing and grazing diet is supplemented by high-quality alfalfa hay and non-medicated grains on the milking stand.  High quality of life is important to us for all on the farm, which includes generous space to forage and play and settle down in the shade for an afternoon nap.  Birthing takes place in individual stalls in our (formerly hog!) barn, and twice daily milkings are held in a free-standing milking house.  In 2006 we purchased an additional 115 acres of rolling hills, pastures, and trees, and are eager to move all the 2-legged and 4-legged beasts to the beautiful site as soon as we have enough funds to support the project!  Meanwhile, we keep the herd small to maintain the spaciousness, which means we are forced to be extremely selective as we maintain the foundation of high quality and focused genetics.

Cheese-making is a spring, summer, and fall endeavor in our home kitchen, and at this time I make raw milk cheeses for our home consumption only.  I have had good success with chevre, feta, fresh mozzarella, gouda, baby swiss, cloth-wrapped cheddar, and parmesan. Experimentation with new varieties, both with standard recipes and my own creations, is on-going, and I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with students from nearby Grinnell College and anyone else who is interested - and learning from them as well.  We have plans for a licensed creamery on the new site, but meanwhile, practice makes perfect and is also a lot of fun!

Jasper Farm The Larissa in memorium

Always missed

Forever in our hearts

(1997?) - March 1, 2010

Our first goat and what an amazing doe she was!  Larissa took a winding path to us and who knows what her life had been like - but  from Sept 2003 on she was truly home, deeply loved and cherished.
